About This Spot

Stepping into Hartery's Family Restaurant on Main Street in Stephenville feels like settling into a familiar corner of a small town where time has a gentle pace. The modest, somewhat vintage interior reflects the community’s roots — no flashy décor, just a simple, inviting space where locals gather over hearty meals and conversation. There’s a relaxed rhythm here, where friendliness is as much on the menu as the food itself.

Whether you’re easing in for breakfast or winding down with a comfort meal, the atmosphere encourages lingering. It’s the kind of place where you can expect warm hellos from the staff and a down-to-earth feeling that this is not just a stop on your day, but a spot where people connect. Every meal is a chance to experience familiar flavors served with a sense of neighborhood hospitality.

The kitchen leans into classic home-style fare that speaks to the coastal spirit of Newfoundland — from fish and chips prepared with care, to generous platters of turkey and burgers that invite conversation over shared laughter. Portions tend to be generous and unpretentious, with a respect for tradition in the way dishes are put together, offering comfort without fuss.

While the setting is straightforward and a bit old-fashioned, it adds to the charm of a place where the priority lies in good food and genuine service. The staff’s approachability and willingness to accommodate guests often stands out, further underscoring the welcoming vibe that makes this spot more than just a restaurant — it’s a small-town gathering place.

Though the décor hints at years past, the experience unfolds in real time with the natural sounds of chatter, the clinking of plates, and a casual buzz of activity that feels alive without being hurried. It’s a reminder that some of the best moments in dining come from the simple act of sharing a meal in a place that feels like it belongs to the community.

Ate here a couple times while in town. The fish and chips are very good. The pork chop I wouldn’t recommend, it was a little dry. The Philly cheesesteak sandwich however though was very good. Everyone that served us was very nice too. We tried a piece of the lemon pie and it was spectacular, 10/10 recommend.

Breakfast was great. Plenty of food at a very reasonable price. But what really gets the 5 Stars was the friendly helpful service. Staff and owner made themselves available to accommodate and answer questions. Such a friendly small town diner feel.

Great dining area, friendly staff. I had the 2 Piece Pan Fried Cod. Fish was great! Fries were frozen but they were still good! Topped with dressing and gravy that were also great. Tartar sauce was average. My brother had the Big Boss Burger and my father had the Roast Turkey Dinner both of which were very good as well. The winner of the three was definitely the burger though !

"Experiences change from poor to good service". Poor service on our last visit. Took awhile to acknowledge you were there. Had to ask for coffee and the meal was half over. No spoon to stir your coffee. Asked for items to be well done, didn't happen. It wasn't that busy, but seen other waitresses busy as bees and on the ball. Smile goes along way Have to say I did go back 2 months later and had the best service ever. Had clubhouse without ham, and the service was top notch

Went to have breakfast but it unfortunately ended at 11. Would be nice to have it extended to maybe even 12. Got a clubhouse with fries which was excellent. Nice large portions. Outside the restaurant looks great. Inside is dated and could use a facelift. Service was great and staff was very friendly. I would dine here again.

Good food. I tried the club wrap. It was a good size and nicely filling. My husband tried the chicken wrap. It was also a decent size and he said if filled him! The employees were very nice! Such a good experience.
